Violet Ethel Mary Walrond was a New Zealand swimmer born on February 27, 1905, in Auckland. She made history as the first New Zealand woman to compete in the Olympics, participating at the age of 15 years and 178 days during the 1920 Summer Olympics in Antwerp. There, she competed in two swimming events: she finished fifth in the 100 meters freestyle and seventh in the 300 meters freestyle. Walrond retired from competitive swimming in 1923 and passed away on December 17, 1996, in Taupo, Waikato.
