Petrić was notable for being the first individual to earn a Ph.D. in film studies in the USA. His career began in direction across film, television, and theater but later shifted towards experimental film. His contributions to cinema and academia received recognition through various awards, including a Fulbright scholarship and accolades from the Anthology Film Archives.
