Vladimir Iosifovich Petviashvili was a Soviet plasma physicist from Georgia, born on September 12, 1936. He made significant contributions to the theory of solitons and was associated with the Kurtschatow Institute in Moscow and the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology. In 1970, he, along with Boris Kadomtsev, developed the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation, which has important implications in two-dimensional soliton theory, paralleling the Korteweg-de Vries equation in one dimension. He was awarded the Tamm Prize in 1992 for his work.
