Vladimír Vetchý is a Czech mathematician and politician born on May 9, 1949, in Třebíč. He graduated from the Faculty of Science at Jan Evangelista Purkyně University in Brno in 1972. During the communist era, he taught mathematics at the Military Academy. A member of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia from 1980 to 1989, he later joined the Czech Social Democratic Party (ČSSD) in 1991. Vetchý served as Minister of Defense from July 22, 1998, to May 4, 2001, and has held various local political positions since then.
