William Herbert New, born on March 28, 1938, is a prominent Canadian poet and literary critic from Vancouver. He received his education from John Oliver Secondary School, the University of British Columbia, and the University of Leeds. His teaching career at the University of British Columbia spanned from 1965 to 2003, including roles as Assistant Dean of Graduate Studies and acting head of the English Department. He holds an Officer of the Order of Canada title and has an extensive editorial background with Canadian Literature. He is also the father of actor Peter New.
