W. Michael Blumenthal (born 1926) is a German-born American economist and politician who served as the U.S. Secretary of the Treasury under President Jimmy Carter from 1977 to 1979. Fleeing Nazi Germany at age 13, he spent WWII in the Shanghai ghetto until 1947. Blumenthal later moved to San Francisco, graduated from UC Berkeley and Princeton, and became active in business and public service, guiding economic policy and U.S.-China relations during his tenure. Post-resignation, he held executive roles at Burroughs and Unisys and directed the Jewish Museum in Berlin for 17 years.
