He made his fortune during Saudi Arabia's economic boom in the late 1970s and 1980s through a contracting company. Notably, Saïd was an intermediary in the arms deal between Saudi Arabia and the UK known as the 'Al-Yamamah' deal, one of the largest arms purchases in British history. He donated £20 million to establish the Saïd Business School at Oxford University, which carries his name.
