Wakanohana Kanji II, born Shimoyama Katsunori, was a prominent Japanese sumo wrestler who achieved the rank of Yokozuna, the highest in sumo. Born on April 3, 1953, in Owani, Aomori Prefecture, he began his sumo career in 1968 and became known for his speed and technical skills. He was the 56th Yokozuna, first rising to the rank of Ōzeki in 1977 and later winning multiple tournaments, although he often competed against stronger opponents. Wakanohana retired in January 1983 and subsequently founded the Magaki-beya stable. He passed away on July 16, 2022, due to lung cancer.
