Walter (Wal) Chisholm was a New Zealand-born athlete and coach who moved to Australia in 1936 to pursue cycling. His sports career was interrupted by WWII when he served as a commando. Post-war, he became renowned for coaching the pole vault, nurturing numerous athletes and winning many championships. Key athletes included dual Olympian Ray Boyd and several record-setting vaulters. He devoted 50 years to coaching and found personal success as a father when his son, Robert, became a champion. He passed away at the age of 90 in 2005.
