Wally Schirra was an American astronaut, captain in the U.S. Navy, pilot, aerospace engineer, and test pilot, known for being one of the original Mercury Seven astronauts. He commanded the Mercury-Atlas 8 mission, launched on October 3, 1962, during which he orbited the Earth six times and spent a total of nine hours in space. Schirra also served as the commander of the Gemini 6A and Apollo 7 missions, contributing significantly to the United States' efforts in space exploration.
