After undergoing gender reassignment surgery in 1983 and living for eight years as a woman named Laura Jensen, he detransitioned due to unresolved psychological issues. Heyer has dedicated his work to helping individuals considering gender transition and those who regret it. He has authored six books on the subject and spoke at the Czech Parliament in 2020.
