Walter Carleton Monegan III, born in May 1951, is an American politician known for serving as the Police Chief of Anchorage, Alaska, and later as the Commissioner of Public Safety for Alaska. His dismissal by Governor Sarah Palin in July 2008 garnered significant media attention, especially following her Vice-Presidential nomination. Monegan has claimed that Palin was not truthful about the motives behind his firing. In 2016, he was reappointed to the position of Commissioner of Public Safety by Governor Bill Walker.
