Walter Assef (May 31, 1913 – January 14, 1988) was a Canadian politician and former mayor of Thunder Bay, Ontario. He was the first and only mayor to be elected for two non-consecutive terms, first from 1973 to 1978 and then from 1981 to 1985. Born in Sioux Lookout, Ontario, to Lebanese and Brazilian parents, Assef was known for his populist approach. His behavior in council was often criticized, and he notably refused to attend the opening of a community hall during his tenure. His whimsical nickname 'Jolly Wally' highlighted his playful public persona.
