Walter Louis Baily Jr. (July 5, 1930 – January 15, 2013) was an American mathematician known for his research in algebraic groups, modular forms, and theoretical applications of numbers and automorphic forms. Notably, he worked with Armand Borel on the Baily-Borel theorem, which involves the quotient of symmetric Hermitian spaces by arithmetic groups. He was a fellow of the Putnam competition, taught at Princeton and MIT, and held a professorship at the University of Chicago, becoming emeritus in 2005. He was fluent in Japanese and Russian.
