Emigrating to the U.S. from Jamaica, he played drums and composed songs during the 1920s and 1930s, collaborating with notable artists like Billie Holiday and Frank Sinatra. His notable compositions include the R&B hit "Jack, You're Dead," and "Swing, Brother, Swing." He is recognized for his contributions to the genre and the works of various performers. Bishop was also the father of jazz pianist Walter Bishop Jr.
