Walter Edward Gaskin Sr. is a retired lieutenant general of the United States Marine Corps, known for his groundbreaking role as the first African American to hold the positions of deputy chairman and chairman of the NATO Military Committee, serving from May 2009 to August 2013. He acted as Chairman for a brief period between November 2011 and January 2012. Gaskin is also an Executive Fellow at the Institute for Defense and Business and was appointed Secretary of the North Carolina Department of Military and Veterans Affairs in January 2021.
