Alongside his partner Helmut Vollprecht, he competed in the inaugural doubles event at the 1964 Winter Olympics, finishing fourth. He also secured silver at the East German Championships in 1964 and 1965, along with a bronze in singles competition. Eggert's legacy continued through his son Sven and grandson Toni, both of whom excelled in the sport.
