A resistance fighter during the 1934 February Uprising, he fled to the Soviet Union and later served as a Brigade Physician during the Spanish Civil War. After returning to Austria post-WWII, he held various roles within the Communist Party. Fischer was also a notable translator of Russian poetry. He opposed Soviet interventions later in his life and remained politically active until his death.
