Walter Ernst Gerber was a Swiss electrotechnician and television pioneer born on September 2, 1902, in Bern. Following his graduation in engineering from ETH Zürich in 1925, he advanced his studies in high-frequency technology. Gerber served as an assistant at ETH and traveled for further studies in radio technology before earning his doctorate in 1930. In 1950, he chaired the International Consultative Committee on Radiocommunications and established the 'Gerber Standard' for European television, setting specifications for image resolution and refresh rate. He later became a titular professor at ETH from 1970.
