Walter Gröger was a sailor in the German Navy during World War II. He attempted to avoid further involvement in the war in 1943 but was arrested and sentenced to eight years in prison. His sentence was later changed to a death sentence for desertion shortly before the end of the war, and he was executed. The request for his execution was made by Hans Filbinger, a naval judge of the Nazi regime. The case of Walter Gröger was rediscovered and publicized by the poet Rolf Hochhuth during the Filbinger Affair in 1978.
