Walter Hoyer was a German civil engineer and university lecturer, specializing in steel construction. After studying civil engineering at the Technical University of Dresden, he worked in steel construction in Dortmund. Returning to his homeland post-1945, he managed the reconstruction of bridges and industries in Dresden. In 1956, he became a professor at the University of Civil Engineering in Cottbus and later at the Technical University of Dresden, where he led various programs in structural engineering. He was also the first director of the newly founded Department of Civil Engineering and edited a steel construction handbook.
