Born in Prostken, East Prussia, in 1910, he earned his doctorate in 1935 with a dissertation on character in early Greek poetry. After serving in World War II, he became a lecturer and then a full professor in Mainz from 1953 to 1975. He edited the scholarly journal Gnomon from 1938 to 1965 and focused on archaic and classical Greek literature, challenging existing theses and translating major Greek authors.
