Walter McAfee was an American mathematical physicist born on September 2, 1914, in Ore City. He graduated from Ohio State University in 1937 and worked as a high school teacher in Columbus until 1942. He joined the Signal Corps Engineering Laboratories at Fort Monmouth in 1942, contributing to Project Diana, which successfully sent a signal to the Moon and received its echo in 1946. McAfee earned his Ph.D. in nuclear physics from Cornell University in 1948 and worked at the U.S. Army Communications-Electronics Command until his retirement in 1985.
