Walter Momper (born February 21, 1945) is a German politician and former Mayor of Berlin, serving from 1989 to 1991 during both the divided and reunified Berlin periods. He was also President of the Bundesrat in 1989/90 and attended the opening of the Brandenburg Gate on December 22, 1989. He became the first Mayor of a unified Berlin on October 3, 1990. Born in Solingen, Lower Saxony, he is a member of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) and studied political science, history, and economics.
