Walter Oberschelp is a German mathematician and computer scientist born on March 29, 1933, in Herford. He studied mathematics, physics, and astronomy at universities such as Göttingen, Tübingen, and Münster, where he earned his doctorate in mathematical logic in 1958. After his habilitation in 1966, he became a university lecturer and later a professor. Oberschelp was a visiting associate professor at the University of Illinois in Urbana in 1967-68. He established the computer science program at RWTH Aachen and has supervised 40 doctoral theses. Post-retirement, he focuses on the history of computing and astronomy.
