Walter Plowright was an English veterinary scientist born on July 20, 1923, in Holbeach, Lincolnshire, who dedicated his career to eradicating rinderpest. He developed the rinderpest vaccine, earning him the World Food Prize in 1999. Under his efforts, rinderpest became the first animal disease to be globally eradicated. After graduating from the Royal Veterinary College in 1944, he conducted research in Kenya and Nigeria. Later, he held significant academic and research positions in the UK until his retirement in 1983, contributing to various viral animal disease studies.
