Walter Poenisch was an American baker and long-distance swimmer, known for his remarkable swimming feats. He began his professional swimming in 1963 at age 50, notably attempting a long-distance swim record in Florida in 1972, and swimming 125 miles in the Florida Straits, entering the Guinness Book of World Records. On his 65th birthday in 1978, he swam from Cuba to the Florida Keys, although it wasn't officially recognized. Poenisch later settled a legal dispute with competitors over his swim claims and passed away in 2000 without formal acknowledgment for his achievements.
