Walter Ritte Jr. is a prominent Native Hawaiian activist and educator born on April 12, 1945, in Ho‘olehua, Moloka‘i, Hawai‘i. He gained recognition as a member of the 'Kaho‘olawe Nine' during the first occupation of Kaho‘olawe island in January 1976 against military bombings. This activism led to his arrest after a 35-day occupation. Ritte continues to advocate against overdevelopment and GMOs, while also practicing and teaching Hawaiian culture. He is married to Loretta Ritte, a fellow activist and former Miss Hawai‘i.
