Wangchuk Tenzing Namgyal, born on April 1, 1953, in Gangtok, is the second son of Palden Thondup Namgyal, the last sovereign king of Sikkim. Educated in England, he was crowned the 13th Chögyal of Sikkim in 1982. Initially, his elder brother Tenzing Namgyal was the heir apparent, but he passed away in a car accident. Following Sikkim's annexation by India in 1975, Namgyal's role has become limited to a symbolic throne claimant with influence only in religious matters, distinct from Bhutan's King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck.
