He became the 22nd Mahanayake Thera on April 7, 2016, following the death of Galagama Sri Aththadassi. Known for his right-wing political views, he has made controversial public statements regarding national issues, sometimes leading to backlash. Gnanarathana Thero also serves as the Chancellor of the Buddhist and Pali University of Sri Lanka.
