Whang-od, also known as Maria Oggay, is a Filipino tattoo artist from Buscalan, Tinglayan, Kalinga, born on February 17, 1917. Recognized as the oldest and one of the last traditional tattoo artists of the Kalinga ethnic group, she started tattooing the warriors and women of the Butbut tribe at the age of 15. Despite the decline of the practice due to social changes, she continues to preserve this art form by tattooing visiting tourists in her hometown. Whang-od has received multiple honors for her contributions to cultural heritage.
