Wiesław Z. Wiśniewski was a Polish astronomer born on May 2, 1931, who spent much of his career studying comets and asteroids. Educated in Poland, he survived World War II, which influenced his perspectives. He worked at the Cracow Observatory and engaged in the International Geophysical Year Expedition. After moving to the US in 1963, he became a professor at the Lunar and Planetary Laboratory, where he focused on astronomical photometry. He was actively involved in observations of asteroids and was preparing for a telescope network to observe comet Shoemaker-Levy 9's impact on Jupiter prior to his death on February 28, 1994.
