After moving to the US in 1963, he became a professor at the Lunar and Planetary Laboratory, where he focused on astronomical photometry. He was actively involved in observations of asteroids and was preparing for a telescope network to observe comet Shoemaker-Levy 9's impact on Jupiter prior to his death on February 28, 1994.
