Wilhelm Carl Johan Esser was a German SS officer who operated in Norway during World War II. Born in Drammen to a Norwegian mother and German father, he studied law and medicine before joining the NSDAP in 1930 and the SS in 1931. Esser worked for the Gestapo starting in 1933 and became a significant figure in suppressing civil resistance in Norway. He was arrested in May 1945, tried in 1948, and sentenced to eight years of forced labor for his role in torturing prisoners. He was released and expelled to Germany in 1950.
