Will Eisner (March 6, 1917 - January 3, 2005) was an influential American cartoonist and writer, notable for being one of the first comic book artists in the U.S. He created the comic series 'The Spirit' (1940-1952) and popularized the term 'graphic novel' in 1978 with the release of his graphic novel 'A Contract with God'.
