William C. Krumbein (1902-1979) was a pioneering American geologist known for his contributions to sedimentology, particularly the application of statistical methods and the classification of sediment grain roundness. He earned degrees from the University of Chicago and served as a professor at Northwestern University after military service in WWII. Krumbein was influential in mathematical geology, co-founding the International Association for Mathematical Geology, which awards the Krumbein Medal in his honor. He published early geological computer programs and received numerous accolades, including the Twenhofel Medal and an honorary doctorate from Syracuse University.
