William Edge was a British mathematician born in Stockport on November 8, 1904. He studied mathematics at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he completed his doctorate in 1928. A fellow of Trinity, he later became an assistant professor at the University of Edinburgh, serving until his retirement in 1975. Known for his eccentricities, he never married or had children and was resistant to modern technologies. Aside from mathematics, he enjoyed walking, singing, and playing the piano, forming a mathematical quartet for Edinburgh Mathematical Society meetings. He passed away in Bonnyrigg on September 27, 1997.
