William Harrison Nebergall was an influential inorganic chemist known for synthesizing calcium pyrophosphate, a fluoride-compatible polishing agent. His work led to the creation of Crest toothpaste, the first to include fluoride, which was introduced in 1955. This innovation, in conjunction with stannous fluoride, eventually helped Crest gain endorsement from the American Dental Association in 1960 as a decay-preventing agent. Additionally, Nebergall coauthored one of the pioneering college chemistry textbooks, 'General Chemistry,' which was published in multiple editions starting in 1959.
