William J. Burns, born on April 11, 1956, is an American diplomat and intelligence official. He served as the Deputy Secretary of State from 2011 to 2014 and retired after 33 years in the U.S. diplomatic service. Burns has held several key positions including U.S. Ambassador to Jordan, Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs, and U.S. Ambassador to Russia. He has achieved the highest rank in the diplomatic service and was nominated by President Joe Biden in January 2021 to lead the Central Intelligence Agency.
