William Rhys Nicholas was a Welsh bard, hymn writer, and minister associated with the Independents. Born on June 23, 1914, in Tegryn, North Pembrokeshire, he gained recognition after winning a hymn writing competition at the 1967 Eisteddfod Pantyfedwen. He graduated in Welsh from Swansea University, where he also served as the Student Union President from 1941 to 1942. Nicholas taught at the further education department of the college from 1952 to 1975 and co-edited the literary magazine Y Genhinen with Emlyn Evans from 1964 to 1980.
