William Robert Olson (also known by the pen name Charles Gibson) was an Australian writer born on October 15, 1922, in Paddington, Sydney. He spent his childhood in Newcastle and attended Newcastle Boys’ High School. Olson worked as a reporter during WWII in New Guinea and later at Sydney newspapers. In 1964, he became the editor of Australia's first nationwide daily newspaper, The Australian. After moving to P & O as director of communications in 1966, he transitioned to freelance writing and publishing in the transportation sector from 1970.
