William Bradford Shockley was an American physicist born on February 13, 1910. Along with his colleagues John Bardeen and Walter Brattain, he invented the transistor on July 5, 1956, for which they were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics that same year. In the 1960s, Shockley also founded the transistor technology center known as Silicon Valley.
