William Thomas Hallenback Jr., known as Thomas, was an American anti-nuclear activist born on March 20, 1947. He is recognized for conducting a 27-year peace vigil outside the White House, the longest recorded vigil in U.S. history. Inspired by the Sermon on the Mount, he traveled the world for peace. In 1978, he was jailed in Egypt for attempting to swim the Suez Canal. He renounced his U.S. citizenship in London in response to U.S. foreign policy. Hallenback died on January 23, 2009, at the age of 61 from pulmonary disease.
