He is currently a senator of the Republic and has previously served as a councilman in Cali and a representative in the House for Valle department for the Polo Democrático Alternativo. He is noted for his investigations into land concentration in Vichada and Meta departments and was recognized as one of the ten best representatives in various opinion studies. Currently, he belongs to the Pacto Histórico coalition.
