Winifred Clare 'Winkie' Ashby (née Griffin) was a notable New Zealand freestyle swimmer, born on 17 November 1932. She gained recognition at the 1950 British Empire Games, securing a silver medal in the 4 x 110 yards freestyle relay. Individually, she stood fourth and sixth in the 440 and 110 yards freestyle events, respectively. In the 1956 Olympic Games, she competed in the 100 m and 400 m freestyle. Griffin won multiple national titles and was married to rower Kerry Ashby until his passing in 2015. She passed away from cancer on 11 December 2018.
