He studied history, classical philology, and political science at the University of Saarland. He completed his state examination for teaching in 1976 and earned his doctorate in 1983. Leschhorn has held various academic positions, including a research assistant at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton and later taught at several universities. He became an honorary professor in Leipzig and has worked as a numismatist at the Herzog Anton Ulrich Museum.
