Xabier Markiegi Candina was a Spanish politician born in Bilbao on December 30, 1938. He served as a member of the Basque Parliament from 1981 to 1994 and was the Ararteko (Ombudsman) of the Basque Country from 1995 to 2000. Markiegi played a significant role in the negotiations during the 1980s that aimed for the dissolution of the ETA terrorist group. He passed away on March 28, 2021, in Aguadulce.
