Xiomara Castro is a Honduran politician born on September 30, 1959. She made history by becoming the first woman to assume the presidency of Honduras on January 27, 2022. Additionally, she is notable for being the first person to hold the presidency from outside the two main political parties, the National Party and the Liberal Party. Castro represented the left-wing Liberty and Refoundation Party in the general elections of 2013, 2017, and 2021, where she ran for president in 2013 and 2021, and for vice president in 2017. She previously led the movement resisting the 2009 coup against her husband, Manuel Zelaya, who served as president from 2006 to 2009.
