Xu played a pivotal role in the design of various Chinese characters, including the Heiyi and Heier types, and was a key contributor to the formulation of new Chinese character norms in mainland China. Additionally, he was a representative inheritor of the intangible cultural heritage project on Chinese printing typewriting techniques in Shanghai.
