Xu Zhizhan is a Chinese physicist born on December 16, 1938, in Changzhou, Jiangsu. He is a researcher at the Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics, where he has served as director and is currently the chair of the academic committee. He graduated from Fudan University in 1962 and obtained his graduate degree from Peking University in 1965. Xu has played a significant role in national projects, serving as the chief scientist for the National 973 Program and is the chief editor of the journal 'Optics'.
