Yahya Sinwar is a Palestinian politician and the head of Hamas's political bureau since August 6, 2024. Prior to this, he served as the leader of Hamas in the Gaza Strip since February 13, 2017. A founding member of Hamas's security apparatus, he was sentenced to life imprisonment by Israel in 1989 but was released in a prisoner exchange in 2011. Israel considers him the mastermind behind the October 7 attacks and has placed him on its list of targeted individuals. In May 2024, the ICC announced plans to issue an arrest warrant against him for war crimes.
